Puerto Rico

We had another awesome club event last month where we learned about Puerto Rico! Jessica & Javier shared not only some of the yummiest homemade empanadas, but so many fun facts and interested tidbits about their Puerto Rican heritage.

Jessica and Javier shared about special holidays, common games and interesting places in Puerto Rico.

The kids had a blast learning how to Salsa and even had the opportunity to make some of their own music to dance along to. Each kid made their own pair of maracas to play. Javier pulled out the conga and the whole room was moving to the beat. This is an activity you can do at home as well. Simply gather 2 Easter eggs, 4 spoons, some tape and dry beans. Fill the eggs with beans and sandwich the egg with the two spoons, being sure to tape it all securely together. The more colorful the tape, the better! Repeat for the second maraca and shake, shake, shake.

As mentioned above, the kids all got to try some of Javier & Jessica’s delicious homemade empanadas! The kids also were able to try arroz con gandules and (virgin) piña coladas!

This month, I chose two books that will help expand your child’s understanding of Puerto Rican Culture and also hear from children in other cultures. These books can be found here and here.

If your child wasn’t able to attend our Puerto Rico night, here are some fun things your family can do together to experience a hint of Puerto Rican culture.

  • Check out some fun books about Puerto Rico from the library.

  • Try learning to Salsa Dance! If you are local to Nashville, Plaza Mariachi offers free lessons every Thursday night.

  • Create your own pair of maracas and play along to some Salsa music!

Our next club event is June 23rd and it will take us to Uganda with help from our culture expert of the month, Lisa! Hope to see you then!
